Assistant Fire Management Officer, Eldorado National Forest, Placerville, Calif.; Soil Scientist, Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station, Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Glendora, Calif. Abstract: The use of prescribed fire in the chaparral could reduce the incidence and impacts of severe wildfires and enhance watershed resources. This paper describes the operational planning needed for a successful prescribed fire and discusses the recent experience with this technique on the Cleveland National Forest.

Postfire Community Structure of Birds and Rodents in Southern California Chaparral1
Associate Professor of Biology, Pomona College, Claremont, California, 91711. Abstract: Changes in rodent and avian community structure were documented for 42 months following a major fire in southern California chaparral. Rodent species richness, biomass per ha, and diversity reached levels equal to, or exceeding, those in 16 to 20 year old chaparral within 15 to 24 months post-fire. Heteromyi...
متن کاملEvaluating Spectral Indices for Assessing Fire Severity in Chaparral Ecosystems (Southern California) Using MODIS/ASTER (MASTER) Airborne Simulator Data
Wildland fires are a yearly recurring phenomenon in many terrestrial ecosystems. Accurate fire severity estimates are of paramount importance for modeling fire-induced trace gas emissions and rehabilitating post-fire landscapes. We used high spatial and high spectral resolution MODIS/ASTER (MASTER) airborne simulator data acquired over four 2007 southern California burns to evaluate the effecti...
متن کاملCost-Effective Fire Management for Southern California's Chaparral Wilderness: An Analytical Procedure
Fire management has always meant fire suppression to the managers of the chaparral covered southern California National Forests. Today, Forest Service fire management programs must be cost effective, while wilderness fire management objectives are aimed at recreating natural fire regimes. A cost-effectiveness analysis has been developed to compare fire management options for meeting these objec...

متن کاملInfluence of humans and climate on the fire history of a ponderosa pine-mixed conifer forest in the southeastern Klamath Mountains, California
Fire history of a ponderosa pine-mixed conifer forest was investigated in the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, southeastern Klamath Mountains, California. Fire return intervals were found to be frequent and similar to other comparable forests in California. Median fire interval for the six sample plots (1.4–1.7 ha) ranged from 2 to 4 years (mean range, 4.8–7.4 years). Most fires (93%) occu...
